Florida Hurricane Season: Are You Prepared?

Batten down the hatches, folks. With only a couple of weeks until the Florida hurricane season, it’s time to get prepared. Hurricane season starts June 1 and lasts five months, typically peaking in August and September. And it stops for no-one, not even COVID-19.

Hurricanes can be deadly and destructive, so being prepared could be a life saver. Here are our top tips on what to know about Florida hurricane season:

Know the cycle of the cyclone

Pay attention to hurricane forecasts and during a watch, prepare your evacuation plan. In case a warning is issued, follow the direction from the officials. In the event of an extreme wind warning, take shelter in the interior part of a well-built structure.

Prepare your home

Secure your home in the event of damaging winds and flooding. Cover windows, secure roofs to the structure of the home, and take in garbage cans or anything that isn’t tied down. Plan ahead for power outages.

Hurricane kits

Gathering supplies for a hurricane kit ahead of the event can help you if you’re forced to evacuate your home or if you lose power. Typical contents can include: non-perishable foods, water, battery operated radio, torch, first aid kit and hygiene items.

Insurance claims

Once the storm has passed and you’ve assessed the damage, it’s time to tackle that debris and make a claim. After all, that’s what insurance is for, right? But what if the insurance company is giving you the run around? What if your claim is denied, delayed or underpaid?

Many people find that insurance companies won’t pay up and give you what you’re owed. Insurance companies can low ball you, dragging out the process. That’s because they have experienced adjusters and attorneys working to help them save as much as possible. Now, on top of a mess in the house to sweep up, some find themselves with an insurance claim to clear up.
